Social Media Platforms between Positivity and Negativity
The world today is becoming increasingly dependent on technology and the Internet, it is true that they are now indispensable in society. In the past, we used to hear the aphorism “The world has become a small village,” nowadays, with the development of technology and communication; we understood that aphorism. Life with technology and visual communication made daily tasks easier than in the past. Some communication books discussed many examples and views on the use of visual communication. From my point of view, I agree with those book on some aspects and disagree with others - with reasons to support my opinion. Life, today with modern technology and developed communication, is not a danger it is greatly improved.
If you lived in 1960, it would be hard to imagine talking and watching your friend in East China from your home in Los Angeles, California would be possible. You may say that it is crazy or unbelievable to talk, hear, and see your friend over such a vast distance. However, today, this has become a reality; you can talk to anyone around the world with a video call without the need to travel or write and send messages via postal systems. Societal progress and the technical development of social communication between people allows for people to be closer and facilitates cultural exchange more than has been noted in the past. Cultural interactions among peoples, whether by social media or other tools, is a characteristic of this time, which we must work to develop and utilize in a beneficial way.
Virtually everything in the world has disadvantages and advantages (e.g., technology, industry), which can also be applied to social media. Some people gave examples of the disadvantages of that can result from social media. I tend to think more positively about social and believe that if there is one negativity, it would be a lack of privacy when using social media. Lack of privacy is a justified concern; people naturally tend to be curious about the news of other people and existed even before social media. For instance, people in the past followed the news via radio broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, and television, eager to know what is going on with celebrities, politicians, or the news (local, national, and international). Today, with social media that natural curiosity has been enhanced, making privacy concerns a reasonable issue when it comes to social media.
The cultural communication between peoples began decades, and even centuries, prior to the emergence of letters, newspapers, and eventually the camera. The camera has advanced the transference of cultural communication by allowing visual communication with peoples around the world – allowing them all to engage with each other. This exchange of cultural awareness and human development was accelerated by the emergence of the Internet and social media. It can be stated that social media has a litany of pros and cons, and from my point of view, social media, presently, has more advantages than disadvantages. In the future, people should focus more on the content and quality of social media and avoiding abusing the technology.
